If you have ever looked at engagement photos and thought, “There is no way I can ever look like that” you are not alone. Almost every couple I meet tells me the same thing.
“We are awkward.”
“We do not know what to do.”
“We have never had real photos taken.”
“Help… what do we do with our hands?”
I always smile when I hear this. This is the place where the magic usually begins.
There is something special about photographing couples who walk in feeling unsure but walk out feeling surprised by how natural the experience felt. Those moments mean the world to me. Looking comfortable in photos is not about being photogenic or experienced. It comes from something much deeper.
It comes from connection.
It comes from trust.
It comes from the space we create before the camera ever comes out of my bag.
Natural photos do not appear out of thin air. They grow from intention and care. I want to invite you into the heart of that process so you can see what really shapes the images you love.
1. Natural photos do not “just happen.” They are created through trust, connection, and feeling safe.
If you have ever wondered why some photos feel stiff while others feel warm and full of emotion, the answer is simple. How you feel around your photographer matters.
You can love each other deeply. You can be fully comfortable with your partner. Yet the moment a camera shows up, you might freeze. That is not your fault. It is a very human reaction.
What creates natural, connected images is trust. Trust in me. Trust in the process. Trust that you do not need to perform or “look perfect.” When couples trust me, something inside them relaxes. Their shoulders soften. Their breathing slows. Real laughter comes out. They start talking to each other instead of focusing on the camera. The way they naturally fit together finally shows up.
That is where the real magic begins.
A story I love to tell
I once worked with a couple who warned me they always looked stiff in photos. They hoped to get at least one image they liked. They told me they felt awkward in front of every camera they had ever faced.
Halfway through our session, after we had talked and gotten comfortable, I gave them one of my favorite prompts: “Walk toward me like you are telling each other a secret.”
No posing.
No instructions.
No pressure.
Something softened. She leaned in. He relaxed his shoulders. They fell into a moment that felt real and theirs. Not a performance. Not a pose. Just connection.
When I delivered their gallery, they messaged me, “Wait… this is us?”
Yes. It was completely them.
That is what happens when you feel safe, seen, and connected.
2. You do not need to know how to pose. That is my job.
Many couples think they need to know what to do during a session. Where to place their hands. How to angle their bodies. Which way to look.
The truth is that you do not need to know any of that. I guide the entire experience. My job is to read your energy, help you ease into movement, and create moments that feel like the two of you.
I lean into prompts instead of stiff poses. Prompts give you something to do that brings out real emotion and natural interaction. Things like:
“Walk toward each other slowly and meet in the middle.”
“Hold hands and sway like you are listening to your favorite song.”
“Pick a direction and walk together like you are heading somewhere fun.”
These moments create images that feel alive. They look like you on your best day, not like a version of you that is trying too hard.
A moment from a recent session
I photographed a couple who arrived feeling nervous. They told me they were worried they would freeze in every photo. I could see the tension right away. Once we started moving, I asked them to walk together while sharing a small memory that always makes them laugh. The shift was instant. They relaxed into each other and everything softened. The candid images that followed were some of their favorites they had ever taken.
They did not have to “pose.” They only needed space to be themselves.
3. Your photographer should make your day feel calmer, not more chaotic.
Most couples do not realize how much the photographer sets the tone for the day. You spend more time with your photographer than almost anyone else, especially on a wedding day. The energy they bring matters. A lot.
The right photographer should make everything feel lighter, not heavier. They should help you breathe, not rush you. They should keep things organized without making you feel managed. When someone shows up with warmth, clarity, and steady communication, the whole day softens. The noise fades. The emotions feel held. You get to focus on each other instead of worrying about what is happening around you.
My goal is always the same. I want you to walk away thinking, “She made everything feel easier.” If you do, then I know I did my job.
A story from a wedding I will never forget
There was a wedding where things were running behind. Emotions were high, the timeline felt tight, and family dynamics were starting to overwhelm the couple. I could see the tension rising. Instead of adding to the pressure, I stepped closer and grounded the moment. I spoke softly. I checked in. I reminded them of what mattered. I helped gather the family members who needed to be in place, organized the next steps, and guided the two of them into a quiet corner where they could breathe.
In that moment, the energy shifted. The chaos eased. They reconnected. From there, everything flowed again. Later that night they told me, “You were the calm we needed. It felt like you held the whole room together without ever making it a thing.”
That is why presence matters.
That is why connection matters.
That is why your photographer’s energy matters.
Anyone can take beautiful photos.
Not everyone makes the experience feel peaceful, supported, and true to you.
